I was really bored today and need some new crap to do besides working on my car or playing video games or cooking. On the plus side I found some dope fabric and might retrim my car in it. It is a perforated suede type material that is really durable and has a strong backing $9 a yard! Might do the door panels or the seat centers. the strip of material on the seat to the console is the stuff.

Those NA seats are in really great shape! Also, you can easily fabricate whole new door cards for the NA, so don't do anything irreversible if you don't have to.

My other hobbies are photography, antiques, Minecraft, and camping.

Rock climbing is my primary. I started a couple years ago and even picked up part time hours at a gym recently. Good stuff.

You are a brave man if you look at reupholstering a car as a "fun challenge". Definitely a project I'd never even think about taking on.

Other hobbies for me are home audio, tinkering with any device running within the Windows ecosystem, and prior to moving last year I had a pretty sweet Scalextric set up that I haven't reassembled as of yet. You can't beat Scalextric as a hobby if you have a spare room (no matter what size track set up you start out with it will grow as you add new track accessories and new sections to race on)

Reading (a ton), repairing appliances, video games (mostly PC Indy games and 80s-90s ones), and nanoblocks.

These are nanoblocks if you haven't seen them. Basically really really small legos built with pliers and tweezers. Just finished that titanic a few days ago.

I sketch and write stuff for a little sci-fi project of mine that I've been on and off with for the better part of a decade now. I also play video-games, mostly MechWarrior Online these days.

Once upon a time I was also a violist, and a pretty damn good one, too, playing with a troupe at the Kennedy Center in DC, and even a few paid gigs for weddings and church ceremonies. But that was a more civilized age, before the Dark Times. Before College.

They look better than they are especially the drivers side is much worse all the leather is cracking but the vinyl is ok. That is why I want to see if an upholstery shop could take out the busted leather and sew in the new fabric in the centers.

Well I learned how to sew by making a bag. it was hard! I plan on paying someone to upholster the seats but doing the door panels seems really simple especially since I want to get rid of the doorhandles/arm rests and the door pockets. pretty much a matter of measuring cutting and wrapping the panel and stapeling the back.

I'm making new door cards over my spring break and covering them in black suede. I want to get rid of the pockets and replace the over sized handles with door pulls. Would you mind sharing exactly what suede material you are looking at?

it really is I was suprised to find it and for so cheap. it is really strong and durable I used a green scotch brite and scrubbed the crap out of it and it was obviously damaged but not much.

here is a close up which looks like the same stuff. I think it is like an alcantara type fabric.

Maybe?

Lego Architecture Studio

I was recruited to be the "local professional" when this set demo'd at a nearby Barnes & Noble. It's a pretty cool set, even the booklet it comes with is co-written by REX, SOM, and a few other international architecture firms.

(BTW, I was majorly obsessed with Lego for the entirety of my childhood and adolescence. Also drawing. Might help explain why I do what I do now...)

I saw one of those at a barnes and noble and was stoked. I never bought it because I dont have tons of money.

I used to love legos and drawing and thought it would be cool to be an architect until I realized everything was done on computers and lost interest.

You might appreciate the work of Peter Zumthor . His creative process invariably begins with drawings, sketches, and most importantly: hand-built models. There was a traveling exhibition a few years ago JUST to display all the elaborate models built to explore his various projects.

And from another perspective, you could definitely say that 99.99% of projects are done in the computer, but the end result is undeniably tangible. For me, there's no feeling quite like watching little pictures and words turn into actual, brand new places that people will inhabit.

That's what would be amazing. Its what I love about art cooking working on cars etc. having an idea become something real and usable. I think the mixture of art/engineering is what I love about architecture and what led me to want to study industrial design.

One of my closest friends is an industrial designer! It's almost where I ended up, but I felt more comfortable in architecture. ID is such a cool field, though, I think. There is a beautifully-short iteration cycle, especially now that 3D printing and laser cutting is so much more accessible, that it makes the prototyping process that much more rapid and ultimately meaningful...

Sort of like, say, Legos? :)

I probably should have studied architecture, but went for civil engineering instead (safe choice?). Hated it, and ended up with a BFA in graphic design . Day job is software/mapping support for a group of geologists; still working out what my second career will be...
